The Novel coronavirus, SARS CoV-2, introduced itself to the world in late 2019 and swiftly occupied centrestage in the form of the current devastating pandemic. It posed an unparalleled health challenge to all of the humanity, hitting people unpredictably in timing and scale. While taking a toll on the health-care systems the world over, it also uncovered the drawbacks in the political, social, and economic infrastructure across the world.
India's fight against COVID-19 has constantly been an all absorbing issue, keeping in mind, the grim challenges of a poor infrastructure and unevenly distributed health-care resources. COVID-19 continues to pose significant challenges to the mankind, as the world faces the challenges of second peaks, newer mutant strains arising, and vaccinating large population numbers. The book titled, “Till We Win,” written by three very eminent health-care professionals of India gives an overwhelming account of mankind's struggle against the pandemic. It narrates the ever-evolving strategies and response of the health-care system which led to the curtailment of casualties, against all odds.
This book is divided into four major sections addressing the myriad issues raised by the pandemic. The first section gives an overview of the various disease causing pathogens whose understanding has evolved over time. It helps in building an understanding of factors which have led to pandemics in the past with special focus on the current SARS CoV-2.
In the subsequent section, this book closely touches upon the real struggle of a common man during this pandemic in catering to his basic amenities, let alone the professional loss. Approaching an uncertain public needed a pragmatic strategy. Going down the lane, it brings into focus the response of the Indian nation to this health hazard giving a tour through all the phases of lockdown and highlighting the “hits” and “misses” of the health-care policies. This is thus a story of an intricate balance between policy making and community participation. A special feature of the book is the part where real-life stories of various strata of health-care workers are covered.
The penultimate section emphasizes the efforts made in search of an effective treatment. The high point of the book is the three Ts - Test, Trace, and Treat which make the essence of strategy against the pandemic. It also gives a thorough perspective of the process of development of a suitable vaccine which has been witnessed in real time. The various frequently asked questions in the book answer the common questions of the public at large and add a unique feature to the content of this book.
The last section recalls the old truism attributed to Winston Churchill-”one should never let a crisis go waste.” This book serves to educate the people about what made a difference and what else could have been done to improve our today and tomorrow. It shows the road ahead elaborating some proposed policies for the authorities to make this pandemic an opportunity for strengthening the health-care system. It offers new optimism in combatting the pandemic wherein we must all pitch in and do our part.
This book will provide for lucid reading and would engage the readers with its simple and practical way in which it goes about discussing various phases of the pandemic. During the pandemic, where scientific articles have been read largely by the doctors and policy makers to understand where the pandemic is heading, but this book provides a different sort of reading, and will appeal to all segments of the society.
